The Costa Elena Resort community is a 90-minute drive from the nearest airport, Liberia International Airport (LIR). We recommend renting a car through Club partner Avis in order to venture out to nearby beaches, quaint towns, national parks, and points of interest.

Great spot for adventures

This property is an excellent choice if you are looking for adventures. This is not a location for shopping, spas and fine dining. Make sure to schedule excursions in advance. Most excursions will offer transportation, but recommend using a rental car Va the transportation. Don't be surprised if you wake up to crabs, scorpions or even a monkey roaming through the place! Highly recommend doing yoga on the pool deck, fishing charters and having a private chef.

Unforgettable!

Our stay in Costa Elena was truly exceptional—luxurious, peaceful, and incredibly well planned from start to finish. The pre-arrival coordination made everything seamless, and Gerardo, the concierge, was outstanding—responsive, helpful, and a pleasure to work with.

The villa itself was stunning, with a breathtaking view and a private pool that made it easy to relax and enjoy the setting. We arranged to have breakfast made in the home daily, and it was consistently delicious—such a highlight each morning. The beach and beach club were equally impressive—beautiful, quiet, and often felt like we had the entire place to ourselves. The view from the beach club was unforgettable.

We also loved the convenience of the shuttle and had an amazing day on the Ryan Lindy boat. The only downside is the long drive from the airport and to some activities, but once you arrive, it's absolutely worth it.

Overall, an incredible stay we would highly recommend.

Unique, Personalized Experience

Costa Elena has a remote "off the grid" vibe with tourist-free beaches within <15 minutes driving distance (we like Playa Rajadita best), and iguanas, monkeys, and birds everywhere. This location might have felt too remote if not for great local contacts: Alba, a masseuse who came to our villa; Javier who guided us on two days of adventuring (ziplining, waterfall hikes, river tubing); Chef Fabian who prepared two excellent meals at our villa; and Gerardo the Inspirato concierge who was responsive and helpful, such as securing freshly caught fish for a dinner we prepared ourselves at home. The Beach Club is truly incredible, with attentive service, great drinks and food, and a relaxing atmosphere. Our family's favorite activity was with Javier, on a private hike to La Leona waterfall, adventurous river rafting and rock jumping, and home-cooked dinner at his tour guide colleague Diego's house on a cheese farm -- a truly unique and authentic experience. We also rented a boat (the Ryan Lindy) which took us for cove snorkeling & swimming, and served fresh caught sashimi. The only negative we experienced was that there are very few (and not great) restaurants in the vicinity, and that it was a 30 minute drive to a grocery store. Overall, the Beach Club, beautiful beaches, lack of tourists, unique experiences and luxury accommodations made this a great Inspirato destination.

Amazing trip with the best service!

We had four couples total in our group - the four king beds and ensuite bathrooms were perfect. Breakfast every morning was amazing - The Costa Elena breakfast was our favorite. Valentina did a great job planning excursions and was more than understanding when we had to make some last minute changes - all were taken care of without any issues. Our on-site concierge, Gerardo, was a superstar!

This place is extremely remote - there is not a lot of walking around shops or exploring the area. We did not rent a car. HOWEVER, that wasn't a problem, we had the shuttle to and from the beach club and we had zero problems just relaxing. Most of our trip we were the only ones at the club and it felt like our own private place. The beach club food was ok - nothing special. The drinks, appetizers, and service were amazing though!! We wanted to sit down by the beach and the staff carried loungers and mini tables for us to sit without even asking. Even our server was waiting nearby anticipating our every need.

Highly recommend the GreenGO tour Total Adventure.

One thing I wish we knew more about was the food options. In their opinion, "Nice and High-end food" for tourists is very heavy seafood-based. Ie. Lobster, Fried Fish, Octopus, etc. All we really wanted was more local/home cooked style food. Ex. Arroz con pollo. That was hard to find. One place that we heard about for "ok" food was Lapa Lapa - it ended up being a great place (next to beach club) with awesome food - ie. Tacos, quesadilla, etc.

This was our first time in CR and our trip was a 10/10!

New Years @ Costa Elena

We spent a week at Costa Elena over the New Years week. The Villa Capuchin was perfect for our party of 8. In fact, one of the rooms was unused because our younger kids wanted to stay together in the amazing bunk room.

Valentina did an amazing job helping us organize all of the pre-arrival activities, meals, etc. On site, our concierge, Gerardo, was incredibly responsive to our every need. Both of them made the trip truly special.

Given the remote location, we opted to have every meal (except for one) prepared by one of the chefs. Our one night out was at the Naked Indian (10 min drive). As much as it was nice to try something different, if we were to do it all over again, we would opt for exclusively eating in our villa. Over our 6 nights in the villa, we had meals with Danny (3x), Sara (2x) and Fabian (1x). They were all truly amazing and better than anything you would get at a restaurant.

After reading other reviews, we opted to stay mostly local and avoid activities that required a long journey - with one exception. The feedback on the Sensoria rainforest tour was really positive, and we decided to have that be our one long-distance activity. It was definitely worth it! We did the “luxury” version that included wine, snacks and lunch. It was pretty amazing to end your trek through the jungle with a bottle of wine a in warm thermal pool. The trip is 2-2.5 hours to get there, but worth it. That being said, we were happy that we only did one such excursion.

Our other activities were all local - kite surfing instructions, ATV tour, fishing trip and sunset boat tour.

We also avoided the Dreams report based on the comments of others. Based on the limited amount of the resort that we did see, this was an easy decision.

Finally, we really enjoyed the beach club. For most of our stay, it felt like we had a private pool to ourselves. I have to imagine New Years is a high travel time to CR and yet the beach club never felt busy. As Costa Elena continues to construct new villas, they may eventually outgrow the relatively small beach club. But, for the foreseeable future, it’s perfect.

All-in-all, we had a wonderful say at Costa Elena and will definitely come back.

My only closing remark would be to keep an eye on the weather at your chosen time to visit. We were there during the transitional period - moving from rainy season to the dry season. As such, the weather was mostly amazing and any clouds or rain were welcome. I can imagine that our visit would have been very different if we were there in the rainy season. Given the remote location, there wouldn’t be much to do if your outdoor activities were limited
