Home to Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run—some of the most renowned golf courses in the world—The American Club is the picture of elegance. A full century ago, Walter Kohler, son of the original Kohler Co. founder, built the main Tudor-style inn as an employee residence, complete with a pub, bowling alley, and barbershop. In 1981, the dormitory was transformed into an elegant full-service hotel. Today, The American Club boasts four award-winning championship golf courses, which have played host to three PGA Championships and the US Senior Open. With nine distinguished restaurants, recreational activities, and Kohler Waters Spa—one of only 56 spas in the world to earn a Forbes Five Star Award—there’s no shortage of things to do at this AAA Five Diamond Award-winning resort.

Location

The nearest airport to The American Club is General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) in Milwaukee, about 63 miles away. Green Bay–Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB) is about 66 miles north, in the other direction. Chicago is the nearest big city, about 150 miles to the south.

If you plan to stay at the resort and take advantage of its abundant recreation, you most likely won’t need a car. If you want to explore further around Wisconsin’s eastern coast, we recommend renting a car through club partner Avis. The resort offers ample parking.

Carriage House

The carriage house room was very disappointing. "Cave Like", could not turn on bathroom lights without turning on lights in bedroom. Minimal daylight through small windows. We were transferred to the American Club main building and the room was excellent. Service at the entire resort was more than satisfactory. Dining option on property were very good, mostly on the more formal side, but we knew that and planned for it. the Immigrant Bar, is a great place for an evening cocktail.

Quiet and Relaxing

We like the formal "old world" atmosphere of this hotel with its rich wood paneling, oriental rugs, and wonderful flower arrangements and courtyards. The rooms were comfortable and quiet. There are many dining options from "formal tablecloth" to pub/tavern fare and coffee/ice cream bar. Excellent golf and spa options, sports core, and shuttles to everywhere. Staff was very pleasant and helpful and even called various departments to find the name of a plant we liked in the courtyard.

Bucket List Golf

Stayed at the Carriage House while playing the Straits & River at Whistling Straits. The Straits course made the trip and is worth a repeat visit someday. River course is a nice compliment course. Course layout along the lake and perfect maintenance of fairways and greens make it a bucket list course for destination golfers that will challenge anyone playing. Carriage house is a historic building so the room was dark inside with only one small window so I give the room just 4 stars while the sports facilities including golf and other activities make it a 5 star experience over all.
